The Many Loves of the ’90s Supermodels; Kate Had Johnny, Stephanie Had Axl, and Carla Had Mick…

The world is, essentially, a model’s oyster. And that was never more so than in the nineties, when Linda Evangelista said she and her super friends wouldn’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day. As for whom they’d get into bed with, well, rock stars and Hollywood A-listers were high on the list. Here, a deep dive into the love lives of top models of the 1990s.

Naomi Campbell
Having been linked with boxer Mike Tyson in the 1980s, Naomi Campbell kicked off the nineties with Hollywood heavyweight Robert De Niro, 26 years her senior. After calling “Cut!” on that relationship, she was introduced to U2’s bass player, Adam Clayton, who once said that the one thing in the world he wanted was “a date with Naomi Campbell.” Though the two quickly became engaged, they never married. The model met her next flame, Joaquín Cortés, on a photo shoot. Despite the fact neither spoke the other’s language, their romance burned for about a year. You can hardly blame her: His fans refer to the dancer as “Señor ‘sex on legs.’ ”

Bridget Hall
Whether or not this tall, brown-eyed Texan (by way of Arkansas) was the first of Leonardo DiCaprio’s model girlfriends, as has been suggested, actors seem to be Bridget Hall’s type. The youngest of the top-earning nineties models, Hall was allegedly once chased around the pool at the Chateau Marmont by Jack Nicholson, and has been linked to Stephen Dorff, Norman Reedus (pre-Helena Christensen), and Matt Damon.

Carla Bruni
“I am monogamous from time to time,” France’s future First Lady Carla Bruni purred to Le Figaro in 2008. She’s still married to Nicolas Sarkozy, but back in the nineties, she was a real tamer of men. Among her conquests: guitar hero Eric Clapton, who made the mistake of introducing Bruni to sticky-fingered Mick Jagger, who stole her away; The Donald; Swiss actor Vincent Pérez; and Kevin Costner.

Christy Turlington Burns
In 2003, Christy Turlington married actor Ed Burns, whom she met after breaking up with another Hollywood hunk and her boyfriend of five years, Jason Patric. Pre-Patric, Turlington had a six-year romance with Roger Wilson (whose initials she tattooed above her ankle ) and a briefer affair with Christian Slater.

Cindy Crawford
Theirs was an all-American love story: Cindy Crawford, the ultimate pinup, and Richard Gere, the dreamboat actor, met at a barbecue at the home of hotshot photographer Herb Ritts, and later exchanged aluminum foil rings in the Little Church of the West in Las Vegas. After the two split in 1995, Crawford had a brief liaison with Val Kilmer before meeting model turned businessman Rande Gerber, who she married on the beach in Paradise Island wearing an abbreviated slip dress with bare feet.

Claudia Schiffer
Famous Guess girl and muse to fellow German Karl Lagerfeld, Claudia Schiffer dated Peter Gabriel before becoming affianced, in succession, to New Jersey–born illusionist David Copperfield and British playboy Tim Jeffries, the latter of whom she met on Valentino Garavani’s yacht. She didn’t marry either of them, but she did eventually tie the knot in 2002 after her husband-to-be Matthew Vaughn reportedly wooed her with the gift of a tortoise.

Kate Moss
In 1993 a Calvin Klein Obsession shoot came between Kate Moss and her photographer boyfriend Mario Sorrenti, and soon the waif was launched on the most famous of all her romances—with heartthrob actor Johnny Depp. Maureen Callahan, author of Champagne Supernovas, described the pair as the “chicest, druggiest couple since Keith Richards and Anita Pallenberg.” After Depp took up with Vanessa Paradis, Moss dated a string of men, from The Lemonheads’ Evan Dando and Spacehog’s Antony Langdon to producer Nellee Hooper, Goldie, and London scenesters Dan Macmillan and Tarka Cordell. In the aughts she had a child with Jefferson Hack and was linked to Babyshambles’ Pete Doherty, before marrying The Kills’ Jamie Hince in custom John Galliano in 2011.

Linda Evangelista
“God, we had a ball,” actor Kyle MacLachlan has said of his six-year romance with supermodel Linda Evangelista. “It was like a party. I got to submerge myself in the world of fashion. I became a bit of a clotheshorse, actually. Linda opened up the world to me.” Evangelista left her model agent husband for MacLachlan after the photogenic pair met on a shoot for Barneys New York. They eventually split in 1999.

Milla Jovoich
Model turned actress Milla Jovovich has walked down her fair share of aisles: An early union with her Dazed and Confused costar Shawn Andrews was annulled; she married and divorced her Fifth Element director, Luc Besson; and she’s now lawfully wed to Paul W. S. Anderson, whom she met while filming Resident Evil. Confirming her predilection for creative types are earlier relationships with Jamiroquai alum Stuart Zender, actor Stephen Dorff, and bespectacled photog (and Kate Moss ex) Mario Sorrenti.

Stephanie Seymour
“A charmer, a puppy dog, a pony with long legs,” is how model agent John Casablancas once described Stephanie Seymour, his decades-younger lover whom the rest of the world knows as a sexy bombshell. Twice married, first to bluesman Tommy Andrews and, since 1995, to billionaire businessman Peter Brant, Seymour dated Warren Beatty and Charlie Sheen, but it’s her relationship with Guns N’ Roses front man Axl Rose that generated the most headlines. Blame it on the band’s epic “Don’t Cry” video, on the set of which the pair first met. Their tempestuous relationship ended in lawsuits.

Tyra Banks
Now a seasoned TV star, Tyra Banks’s first on-air role was opposite Will Smith on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. They were linked for a time in the early nineties. Later, the green-eyed Californian caught the eye of Boyz n the Hood director John Singleton, whom she dated from 1993 to 1996. After Singleton, Banks briefly dated Seal, the musician who also romanced Tatjana Patitz and was later married to Heidi Klum.
